Understanding and Preventing Failed Pregnancies: Perspectives from the History of Chinese Medicine for Women

Throughout the centuries, Chinese medical experts worried about how to protect and preserve the health of mother and fetus during pregnancy, and they set forth their ideas in general medical treatises as well as specialized texts on womens diseases. This webinar will examine how doctors from antiquity through the nineteenth century defined the gestational body and debated therapeutic strategies for securing the fetus and preventing failed pregnancies. By highlighting historical diversities and continuities, this webinar also seeks to enhance participants awareness of the range of possibilities available to them as they adapt traditional ideas to modern practice.
