Sensation, movement and autonomic functions of the face and head are provided by the 12 cranial nerves. Dysfunction in any one of the cranial nerves results in devastating pain, paralysis or dysautonomia. Dr. Chiang will explain classical passages on cranial nerve anatomy and pathology from the Ling Shu. Six out of twelve cranial nerves have branches that reach the surface of the body thus are accessible through acupuncture. Through dissection and electrostimulation evidence, we will learn how to directly modulate these accessible cranial nerves. The remaining 6 cranial nerves that are not directly accessible, can be indirectly influenced through their connection from the brainstem to the cortex of the brain. Informed by MRI-based brain research conducted by Dr. Chiang, we will learn how to influence cranial nerves that are thought to be out of reach.
Using clinical cases, you will see how this research is applied to improve the lives of patients with various cranial nerve pathologies.
